Why does Xanax not work for me sometimes?

Just last night I took a 1 mg Xanax and it did nothing for me. I also notice when I haven't taken one in a while it doesn't work until I take another the next day. It's annoying and I'm just wondering why it's not being effective. I don't take them often so it's not like it's a tolerance issue.
