how do you get to the point that drugs aren’t a coping mechanism?

i see people always saying that they use drugs to enhance their life, not to escape it. honestly, i just don’t know how to get to that point. i feel if i was 100% happy and healthy i might not even have interest in substances. but now i always look forward to getting high or faded because i always feel so good when i do, and the rest of my days feel boring. how does one even get to this point of it NOT being an unhealthy coping mechanism??
