Possible To Start Dreads?

Hair is kinda straight but has a lot of undergrowth on the bottom, so I know I'd just chop off the straight parts at the end and be left with a bunch of hair still. But how would I turn a bunch of nappy hair into dreads? Never done dreads before, advice would be appreciated.
