Ok, now imagine you're also black.

There have been studies that show white people with criminal backgrounds will be chosen for interviews over a qualified applicant with a black name. https://www.shrm.org/topics-tools/news/hr-magazine/study-suggests-bias-black-names-resumes

To get a job you need to interview first and black people get rejected from consideration for... existing. At least the white guy will make it to the first interview.

How are you supposed to get the job if you can't get an interview.

I think the stereotypes applied to people with locks depend on their race and economic status or presentation of their economic status. White people might get the hippie stereotype but black people get the dangerous gang banger stereotype applied, which is worse. When comparing two people of similar 'presentability,' the black person often has to be overqualified to get the job.

Be for real

That's exactly what I was going to get at if they bothered to respond. Them choosing to lock their hair, a hair style that is associated with blackness and rebellion in our society, is what causes them some problems in life. It's proximity to blackness which is undesirable.

He still retains the white privilege though.

Yes, it is. Basic empathy won't kill you.
