After 2 years of delving into this world, I believe I have learned so much about my own body, and so I wanted to share with the community, in case it helps anyone that's still on the journey.
Disclaimer: (All our bodies are individually unique, and that is why even within the same ID, we can have a few differences in lines and fit.)
The following pertains to my own body and lines:
My body:
- I believe I am a little sharper than the average DC, my shoulders are quite sharp, and in combination with my slightly long neck, I can relate them to extreme yang celebrities (not verified) like Keira Knightley, Kendall Jenner and Jaime King. My vertical is slightly longer than moderate, and my face (which doesn’t count during the process of finding ID, but important when considering the whole look), is barely sharp at all: I have soft cheeks, high cheekbones, oval jawline and slightly blunt nose.
My lines:
The keywords I always think when I’m shopping are:
- tailored (ex. Things should be tailored at the waist, whether it’s a dress, top, or high-waisted shorts; and fit snugly at the chest level)
- moderate details (ex. A row of symmetrical buttons, a belt made of the same fabric of my dress, a zipper that gives a little drama to white high waisted shorts, etc.)
Fabrics:
Although I don’t know the names, the best fabric is moderate to stiff. If it’s too light and flimsy, it mostly doesn’t work on me, or sometimes it looks cheap. I look best when the fabric doesn’t mold to my body too much.
Necklines and cuts:
Square necks, mocknecks, v-necks, open shirt collars, boat neck, off-shoulders. (I realized that necklines that are narrower at the chest but widen at the shoulder look best on me!)
Sleeves:
¾ sleeves, long sleeves, (Sometimes I can wear sleeveless if the strap of the top is thick enough)
Others: For makeup, I either emphasize my eyes or my lips, but never both! I love Wayne Goss, especially this tutorial. Also if I’m wearing eyeglasses, I might wear a bold lip and small earrings. If I’m wearing contacts, I can wear makeup and hoop earrings. It all depends on my necklines and hairstyle! For shoes, I’m extremely picky, but I like them to follow the same rules: moderateness with slight details. For my hair I like it moderate- long length (maybe slightly longer than my shoulder line), and I like it slightly wispy with slight long waves
And for my HTT: I try to keep everything to 2 colors or less, ratio about 80:20. For example, one of my fave outfits is high waisted white shorts, a top in any color, a white long cardigan, and white, delicate sandals with a slight heel. I might wear earrings the color of the top. Cardigans always pull my look together! I have quite a few in a variety of colors that match with most of my clothes.
Conclusion:
This is just a general overview and I definitely don’t limit my closet to these choices, but these are the things I look for when trying to find clothes and styles! Another thing I do is look for my best colors (they are deep, saturated, cool and muted: it’s a mix of soft summer and dark winter, but excludes black, grays, and browns.)
My recommendations to anyone who is still trying to know their lines and body better are to have patience, experiment a lot, and take photos. No one will know what looks best on you but yourself, but once you figure it out, sometimes other people start to notice as well. Remember, it takes time, but after you find this out, you can use it for your lifetime. I am really happy that I barely have to think about lines anymore because I know exactly what flatters me best. I wish the same for all of you!
