Town keeps attacking me after Ogre invasion

I was jailed earlier for a quest and I escaped the Gaol and found an Ogre attacking the town. I tried to be a good little Chosen One and assist them, but I kept getting friendly fired. Now, as I kill the town they don't give experience but require me to use waking stones on them. Anyone else facing this issue?
Edit: I had to kill everyone involved in that battle, even the rabble.
