Transfer strategy

First time draft player here ( fpl version in 5-7 man leagues). What would you recommend for transfer strategies during the season as they're presumably less frequent due to holding on to expensive players. I'm aware of trying to snatch up lower team defenders to target short fixture runs but are there any other tips ? Also Do you have any tips for trading and taking advantage of other players mistakes ?
