What to do if my dr martens are one size to small?

My sister bought them as a present but got my size wrong . Sadly we can’t change them because she also lost the recipt. I am size 44 and they are size 43 European. My grandmother told me to just wear them with thick socks inside and also put socks or paper inside when I am not wearing them . Would it be better to sell them and buy new ones or should I try this tricks ? I tried wearing them for 1 week and the pain is just agonizing .
