Mrs. Crawley and Dr. Clarkson are literally a perfect match. That's all.
Dickie's proposal to Isobel, and the scene where Isobel comes to rescue him from his awful son and daughter-in-law, are some of the most romantic in all the show.
Amelia Grey:Â This is ridiculous. Father, Mrs Crawley wants to take you away from your son and your family, and kidnap you into marriage. What do you say?
Lord Merton:Â How perfectly marvellous.
His complete willingness to abandon his estate and riches and comforts for Isobel is very unlike most men of his status. And Isobel's willingness to slowly open her heart to Dickie is beautiful. It's yeah, very romantic, and incredibly wholesome.

They didn't have the chemistry. Isobel enjoyed their chats about medicine, the community, and small niceties, but couldn't see herself being intimate with him physically, nor could she really let her guard down with him.
See how she talks to Dickie, with openness, curiosity, warmth. It's totally different.
