I understand that the acting is terrible, but I really enjoy Edith working it out, it was her first heartbreak. The look on Edithโ€™s face when Mary mentions the governess is great! It may have been done sloppily, but I like the storyline!

It's not the worst storyline in my opinion. I think it's because the WWI storylines and archs were overall good to very strong in comparison that it really stands out as sloppy and cringe.

My least favorite plot line of that part of the series is Tom and Sybil's 'friendship'/'courtship'. He is soooo pushy, and not in a romantic way at all. It could have been way better, since the 'forbidden love' angle the pair represents is plenty drama enough. A will they, won't they, sneaking around, tense, drawn out, passionate affair is very easy to imagine being written instead for those two, without any of Tom's pushiness and shitty attitude necessary. I like them just fine after they elope but holy fuck I hate him before they get together.

I came into the thread expecting it and still laughed.

In my opinion, the show portrays a lot of problematic behaviors regarding courtship, intimacy and marriage between men and women on the show without any attempt at properly deconstructing them. Maybe it's an attempt at realism for the time, but idk, it often rubs me the wrong way.

Yeah she does seem bored by him, they really had 0 foundation before they ran off together. Most of their scenes together prior to that, he's nagging her and she's fending him off. Very little of them talking about their hopes and dreams, viewpoints, planning their future, flirting, being intimate (kissing/holding each other), having passionate disagreements, and so on, which IMO would have been a much more satisfying way to build towards their elopement. Why the writers went in the direction they did I'll never know- it's like they hadn't committed to Tom and Sybil getting together throughout the season 1 and 2.
