The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care UnexpectedHippo announced a range of measures to be implemented by the new National Flu Service to contain the Australian flu.
The National Health Service has announced the release of the National Flu Service, an online service for members of the public to assess their symptoms and access antiviral medication without putting extra strain on GP practices. The service, available as an app for smartphones as well as online, asks users to answer questions about their symptoms and medical history. For those who need treatment, the service can recommend antiviral treatment, and give them a reference number to pick up their prescription from an approved NHS Antiviral Collection Point.
The National Flu Service also has a telephone helpline, open from 7am to 10pm 7 days a week, who can refer callers to collect antiviral medication or provide other advice. Remember in an emergency, always call 999.
The National Flu Service is also releasing an information leaflet to all households in the United Kingdom, advising citizens on the best way to stop the spread of flu, the importance of vaccination, how to spot symptoms, and what to do if you fall ill. It is expected that 95% of households will have received their leaflet by the end of the week. This information campaign will be supplemented by television, radio, and newspaper advertising.
NHS England as part of its National Flu Service has also committed 1,000 community health nurses and allied health professionals to mobile vaccination services. These staff will help vaccinate those in the highest risk groups by visiting care homes, primary and secondary schools, community centres etc. to offer vaccinations. In addition, NHS England will provide the opportunity for vaccination at all antenatal classes and appointments, as well as all long-term health conditions that qualify them for free vaccination. NHS England is also providing free hand sanitizer bottles in all NHS GP surgeries to promote good hygiene amongst patients.
Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, /u/UnexpectedHippo, spoke of the importance of vaccination during the announcement. “Vaccination remains the best form of defence against the Australian flu, and it is not too late to get vaccinated. For those who qualify for free vaccination - over 65s, pregnant women, those with underlying health conditions - it is vital to get vaccinated.” The Department of Health and Social Care also announced today that the free flu vaccination will be extended to all children under the age of 18, to ensure that our children are protected.
The Department of Health and Social Care is looking at further options to halt the spread of flu in the United Kingdom, but encourages the public to remain calm and get vaccinated.
