Looking for a thorough guide on hero roles - carry, semi-carry, ganker, initiator, support, etc. What do they mean, who is which role, and what should I be doing as each throughout the game?

Some are of course self-explanatory, but I'd like to know what I should be trying to do in each role, particularly the more nuanced ones like semi-carry.
How long do I farm, if at all? When do I roam? What's my job in the mid-game? How should I build? Stuff like that is what I really want to know.
