How hard is it to find a fjord/mule?
Post Body

We’re looking for a mule to have on our homestead in the smokies. We have some pretty hilly parts of our property and would like a mule to have for around the farm. We were split between a fjord horse and a mule and thought why not a fjord/mule. Are these hard to find?

Comments

That depends if someone has fjord mares around you. I’m over in Canada and we have quite a few around but it’s a locale thing. I’ve never met one who is particularly hard working though, they’re pretty pony like and generally pretty slow.

It’s really about the individual. Like I’ve said to you in the past thread, mules are extremely individual. One may lean towards the donkey dad, a full sibling may take after the mare. You want to start looking for individual mules — one that suits you, the breed will have very little to do with it. Get on Facebook, join some mule groups for your area, and start shopping for a suitable proven animal for your needs.

Despite your background with barrel racing, mules are not the same as horses — everything from husbandry, personality and training are all very different

This is coming from someone who has working mules, horses and donkeys (ranch/outfitter)
