I recently fell in love with a Mammoth donkey. My question is the only boarding opportunity is a rotational pasture board with a herd of 30 horses and a few mules. They are allowed to free graze on grass in the summer and are supplemented alfalfa in the winter. I know donkeys are prone to obesity and free pasture may not be good for them?
The mules seem to do fine , and in the winter there is no shelter so the herd gets daily alfalfa, which helps them in the harsh colordao winters.
Any advice on if this is a bad idea to pursue? I know alfalfa is not recommended for donkeys but I have not seen recommendations for free pasture donkeys either
Not a bad idea as long as youโre willing to monitor the donk and adjust their diet as required, which may include taking them out of mixed board and into a dry pen.
