Took a delivery today. Recognized the place as soon as I pulled up. One of those customers that never tips, bad driveway, trailer. They're usually on the porch waiting for me. It was strange that no one was outside today, especially since they were my last order on a triple.
I get out of my car and walk towards the tiny handmade wooden porch. Suddenly a black and white pit bull I've never seen slinks out from under the porch. He's bound by a frayed rope, but the rope is long and I am close. I see a lot of dogs on deliveries. I've only had a problem two or three times, but in those instances I could gauge the situation before I exited my vehicle. All I could do today was stop and let the dog approach me. He sniffed me and seemed indifferent, so I proceeded up the rickety steps. I still haven't seen the customer and the order has the auto contactless flag. I unpacked the order unto the railing near the door, set down my little clipboard for me them to acknowledge my stiff on top, then knocked. I turned around to take 6 steps back from the door when the dog suddenly started snarling and barking. I was backed up against the customers door and froze.
I hear the door open, but I stay still. I apologize for not stepping back on a contactless order, but the dog isn't letting me off the porch. Dude starts yelling, letting the lit cigarette hanging from his mouth fall, and the dog calms down for the most part. I move off the porch keeping my eyes on the dog and my hot bag in front of me. I collect the receipt from the customer and slowly back away to my car. That's when I notice it. A tip. $1 on a $42 order. When I returned to the store I added an aggressive dog flag on their phone number. Next time I will call to tell them to secure their dog or come to my car. And they should really think twice about ordering drinks.
If a customer's dog ever actually bites me, I will do whatever I can or need to in order to get free or get away. Your dog's safety is not a concern. Then I will ask for homeowners or renters insurance information to file a claim. I will pursue medical expenses and lost wages. You knew I was coming. If your pet's going to be a problem, prepare in advance.
Who has a dog bite story?
