The problem with "Optimal"

Post Body

So recently at the other Dokkan subreddit, there has been hot debate about whether Super Pikkon is optimal. One one hand you have people who swear by him, but on the other hand you have established members of the community who called Pikkon and the banner crap outright, just because it's not "Optimal". I think this latest controversy really shows the toxic, and often times the "It's us against them" mentality of that subreddit".

I am going to start out by saying Super Pikkon isn't optimal, especially in a meta that is completely focused on damage. In that respect those "established members" are right. But what they don't realize(and why their rub people in the wrong way and come out as arrogant) is the fact that most people don't have team that are anywhere close to optimal. To say that something is crap just because it isn't the best seems really out of touch, especially when you consider the value of the banner. The star units of this banner are quite good(unless your Hero or Super PHY is decked out, SSK is a good sub), and you have much higher chance of pulling them for 30 stones. That's a very good deal when you consider that the chance of pulling SSJ4, or (any banner unit), is slightly better than coin toss after 450 stones

I also find it puzzling that most of the reviews are focused almost entirely on whether something is optimal or not. I've seen unit reviews on other Gacha games, and I really don't see that kind of obsession there. And like SSK, dismissing Pikkon out right just because it's not necessary for optimal team during current meta just seems very narrow minded and it's not all that helpful outside of the select few who can afford optimal teams.

So what makes units like Pikkon so great that you should pull on him? Pikkon is a lot like AGL Golden Frieza in that he has unique defensive capabilities that will make them relevant long after power creep has made their offense obsolete, and not many cards have those kinds of capabilities. Whenever I see people clearing events with old God leads or even Gogeta, a lot of the strategy is focused on playing defensively while your friend unit or your main attacker deals bulk of the damage. TEQ Pikkon made SV/SSBK fight a joke for me with Gogeta lead and the new Pikkon is a better version of that.

He may not be necessary for anyone with optimal team in the current meta, but for anyone who didn't pull SSJ4s, Pikkon can be a great addition for anyone running VB or Omega lead, providing much needed defensive capabilities. He can also come in handy in the future if you didn't pull a God lead and you may be left behind in the new meta. Again, his damage output isn't that important, he is there to mitigate damage while other units do the heavy hitting.

I am posting this here, because after seeing what transpired in the other subreddit, it has become clear that it's hard to have balanced conversation about this. Pikkon is either God or trash, and any good points people make about merits of him outside of optimal/non-optimal debate gets buried.
