Hi everybody. I’m sure this is a frequent topic on this sub so I’m sorry, but I’m not sure what else to do. My dog needs to learn to be okay in a crate. We’ve been letting her free roam at night since she hates it so much (screaming, barking. ALL night.) but almost every morning there will be pee/poop somewhere. I’m so sick of cleaning it up. My other dog is perfectly content in a crate. He loves it. But he does whine when he has to be in a crate and his sister gets to be out. Anyway - I’m running out of options/time because they were staying with my parents and apparently she was barking all night. Usually at my parents, she’ll sleep through the night in a crate. It’s never been an issue. She cannot free roam in their house because there’s several things she could get into and chew on that would hurt her. I need her to be able to be crated because they always watch the dogs when we’re away and I need to still have that option. Anyway, I feel like I’ve tried everything. We did an absolute shit job crate training her as a puppy and I kick myself in the ass everyday for it. When trying to retrain, I’ve tried kongs, lick mats, treats, etc. I’ve tried associating it with good things by systematically dropping treats in there throughout the day (door open, she can go in or out) I’ve tried feeding her all her meals in there. She will go in when I ask her to, but she can’t stand being in there with the door closed for any amount of time. Anyway sorry for the horribly long post. I’m just tired
Edit: we’ve also tried things like CBD chews and even got her a prescription for trazodone. Those didn’t work. We’ve tried just putting her in an enclosed area but with more space and an open ceiling sort of like a play pen. She hates that too and will try to dig out.
