My 1-year-old Australian Shephard is completely house trained and goes pee on command, but he continually insists on stopping wherever he wants to poop on the sidewalk when we're on walks. I will immediately redirect him to somewhere I want him to poop and reward him when he does, but most of the time he'll just sniff and sniff for 10 minutes and then the second I get tired of waiting and start to walk again, he'll try to go poop on the sidewalk again. It's infuriating because it happens like 5 or 6 times on a single 30-minute walk. If he had to go that bad, I would assume that he would go where I redirect him instead of wasting 10 minutes sniffing. I get the occasional emergency, but this feels like compulsive behavior rather than him being unable to hold his bowels any longer. He runs around plenty in the house yet he's always able to hold it inside. How do I train this out of him so that he poops only in certain spots where he knows he's allowed like my yard or designated patches of dirt around trees on the sidewalk rather than on the pavement?
