How do I teach my dog to “hold it” overnight?

Post Body

Dog is a 13 month old Jack Russell chihuahua mix, neutered male about 25 lbs.

So my dog can signal when he needs to go outside during the day, and he usually holds it about 3 hours depending what he’s been doing.

I recently moved and now have access to a yard so I try to let him out regularly since it’s sooo easy now to just open the door and have him do his thing.

But since I never had a yard overnight, he’s used to using the puppy pads and will signal less at night and seek it out automatically. It’s not the worst thing bc I also feed him late due to work and have never taken away his water at night.

But now I’m wondering how I can train him to hold it longer and overnight. He used to do it and was on a schedule but he’s since stopped.
