Advice on Leash Pulling Immediately After Reward

Hi all,

So thankful that this subreddit exists!

We just adopted a 1 1/2 year old Rottie/Shepard mix, and are in the process of training leash manners. We use positive reinforcement training, and he seems to be doing well, but there's one weird little behavioral thing that I'm stumped on how to break.

First, he responds well to treats, and has been taking well to the clicker, but I've found that when we're leash training, immediately after he gets the treat, he charges ahead. He's learned to stop when he feels tension on the leash and come back, but I'd like to stop the charging right after he's rewarded. I'm not sure how to go about this. He's definitely understanding that he's not supposed to pull, but it's the back and forth that I'd like to stop.

Any ideas on how to get him to continue to pay attention after he's rewarded? I've tried both a continuous reinforcement schedule and a variable one, and he responds the same.

Thanks in advance!
