How do I befriend my wife's dog?
Post Body

Alright, here's the story. My wife saved this puppy's life a while back, and raised her by herself. Puppy clearly has trust issues around new people, and my wife is the only person she respects. My wife moved out of her parents house a year or so before we met, and left the dog in their care while she got settled. Apparently, for the past year or so, her parents kept the dog on a three foot chain outside, feeding her whenever they remembered, and never bringing her in during thunderstorms or freezing weather. We only found out last week when we were informed that the dog had escaped her chain and ran off into the woods three days prior. We drove to the parents house and my wife searched through the woods to find her. She was found, and we mutually decided not to have her stay at the parents house anymore. We cleaned her up and brought her to our apartment. Here's where the problem is...

The dog doesn't like me. In the slightest. Half the time she's terrified of me, the other half she's jealous. For the first week or so, I opted to stay up at night to take her out to pee if needed, while wifey sleeps. Since she has to work early mornings, she has to have a full night's rest. Typically this involved me being on the computer or something trying to stay awake while the dog did whatever, until it was time to go outside. In that week, the dog has gotten used to sleeping in the bed with wifey. Wasn't really an issue with me, until last night, when I tried to get in bed with my wife, and the dog scratched me twice.

During daylight hours, the dog will avoid any and all contact with me. Makes it exceptionally difficult since I offered to take care of her and walk her while the wife is at work. For wifey, the dog is tame and cooperative when it comes to going on walks. For me, I have to use a special harness on the poor dog, because if I attach the leash to the collar like the wife does, the dog is likely to strangle herself or pull the collar off, the way she fights.

I've had dogs before when I was younger. They were typically all strays, who wandered up on the property, and had some basic idea of right and wrong. And training them was pretty simple. Good behavior gets rewarded, bad behavior gets popped on the nose. My wife, however, spoils her dog whether her behavior is good or bad, giving her treats and bits of her food so much that the kibble goes uneaten, and hitting the dog in any shape or form is forbidden, as I found out last night, when I got scratched the second time and popped the dog out of reflex, which got me cussed out. All this to say, there's no way I can train the dog, and my wife hasn't shown the self restraint necessary to do it herself.

Tl;Dr, the dog is possessive over my wife, and refuses to cooperate with me. I try to spend time with the dog, and do positive things with the dog, but she won't let me near her. She refuses to eat anything I've touched, fights tooth and nail when I take her on walks, and when we're in the same room, she stays out of reach. She's only 2, and everyone keeps saying she'll warm up to me, but in the meantime, it's really hard to keep my commitment to take care of her for my wife. And I don't really know enough about dogs to figure it out myself. Any suggestions?

Since I can't add pictures, she appears to be a mix between shepherd and coyote. That's about the best description my wife can give
