Ways to help dog lose weight

My 5 year old catahoula mix is 7 lbs overweight and I want to know what else I can do. I can't run with him since he has slight joint problems but I have changed his diet. What else can I do? Would water therapy be a good option? My vet said that since he doesn't eat a lot during the summer, to cut back on his portions and we'll see where he is in the fall.
Edit: He does enjoy little rounds of fetch and playing with the other dogs in the neighborhood.
