My dog is a whippet, almost a year and a half old. He has always had issues with trying to ingest things he shouldn't, anything that fits in his mouth is fair game. This has been going on since he was a puppy.
He AGGRESSIVELY tries to eat anything he can. Pushing us out of the way, desperately trying to get to things on counters or along sidewalks, etc. He's discovered making sudden chaos somewhere will distract us from our own dinner. When we get up, he bolts to our food.
We keep him well fed, to the point of always leaving food out in hopes of curbing the pica habit in case of hunger. (He's never been intentionally fed "people food"). We've tried different foods to keep his interest, though most he becomes indifferent to once the novelty has worn off.
He does have horrible separation anxiety, but he's not always alone when these things happen. We've got tons of toys and puzzles for him. My partner works from home so he's never entirely alone. He gets lots of exercise.
Last week, he chewed on broken glass. He got a wine glass, and luckily I heard the first crunch so I was able to get it away from him. He had a tiny bit of blood in his gums; I gave him bread to cushion in case a tiny piece got ingested while I kept an eye on him.
Just now, I was outside for 15 minutes and came back to him having destroyed a small plastic container holding sewing needles that should have been out of reach. I don't know if or what he ingested. Watching him to see if I need to take him to the puppy ER.
We try to keep everything out of reach. We clean up religiously and try to train him. He's had EXTENSIVE professional training totalling to several weeks worth of hours. He's very intelligent, but chooses to use his powers for evil.
I'm not sure what else to do besides keeping him in a cage muzzle all day. We've become so exhausted personally and financially trying to keep him out of trouble or from killing himself. He's basically bff with the vet at this point.
Does anyone have insight or experience with extreme levels of pica in dogs?
