Post Body

We have an 11 year old chiweenie. ~24 lbs, looks like a wire hair terrier.

Compressed Backstory: He was very sick, wouldn’t move or go to bathroom. They did an xray and saw nodes throughout his body. Said it was cancer and he had days to weeks. He was put on a steroid (prednisone) and began to get better. Eventually the nodes were gone and he was fine, but the steroid had been used long enough that he was made diabetic.

Current regimen: twice daily shot with a meal, 6 units. His food is around 3/4 cup dried food with something fish-based as a topper to entice (dachshunds are picky). His glucose monitor has him averaging around 400 which I know is too high for a healthy dog but still high for a diabetic dog.

Any tips on how to get him to eat? We used healthy topper, changed his eating location up with the new food. He likes music and us being around to eat at all but I need consistent eating to qualify for the shot, which he needs to live.

Also for anyone with a diabetic dog, does it sound like we need to up his dosage? I ask here because the vet has not always been great at assessing this. If we listened to them he would have been dead a year ago and he currently acts like he’s 7.

Thank you for any help!
