Hello everyone!
My 2 y/o pitbull hasn’t been eating recently. It started about 5 weeks ago. There wasn’t any immediate trigger I noticed but one day she just wouldn’t eat her kibble (Hill’s Sensitive Skin Stomach) After about a 3-4 days of trying to get her to eat I switched to adding some wet food as a topper to try to entice her to eat. that worked for maybe 2 weeks but I also noticed she wouldn’t touch the kibble if I gave it to her alone. Anyways, she stopped eating it with the wet food now too. I tried other flavors and nothing. I figured maybe she was bored of her food and wanted something different. So we transitioned to a new kibble that was salmon and sweet potato based. She loved it ! Her coat and digestion got significantly better. She ate it normal (no wet food) for a while and then stopped eating it again. I added a topper and that worked for a day.
If I drop kibble on the floor, she’ll eat it and is always excited when I bring her bowl out but when I put it down she takes a bite and walks away. She follows me around when I cook or eat for my food, like she’s hungry but won’t eat. I don’t normally feed her any human food because I wanted to try and avoid situations like this sigh
I set her food out at the same time, breakfast and dinner and pick it up about 45 minutes later if I see she hasn’t touched it. We’ve also tried just free feeding and she wont eat either. As of right now, she hasn’t eaten in 1 1/2 days. She’s sniffing around the kitchen for food. Im frustrated and running out of options. I can’t afford those fancier raw food options like the farmers dog without getting a second full-time job.
I’m a first time dog owner and im still in college, prepping for veterinary school so my budget is already limited. Unfortunately my curriculum is about the bones in her body rather than behaviors so I need a little help. I may sound selfish to some but I can’t afford to keep experimenting with all these foods for her to not finish a bag of it. I’ve spent at least $200 in the last week trying to figure out what’s been going on.
If it helps to know I’ve also been to the vet, they said her work up was normal, her fecal, bloodwork and urinalysis were also normal. Good and healthy
I personally think she’s trying to hold out for better food bc she knows there are better options but im not sure what to do. Literally anything to help me out would be awesome. Thanks
