Literally means “money swallowing beast”. It’s a reference to the numerous fantastical beasts in Chinese folk mythology, many of whom can spit out gold, cry tears of pearls, etc.. Except this creature only drains your wallet and doesn’t do anything useful.
Babies, cats and dogs are called 四脚吞金兽(four-legged money swallowing beast), toddlers can be called 两脚吞金兽(two-legged money swallowing beast).
The term is somewhat endearing. For example, one can post a picture of an expensive vet bill and say “My 四脚吞金兽 strikes again!”
Edit: It’s pronounced “tūn jīn shòu”.
