Dodger of the Day - Al Scheer, LF (1913)
Post Body

Today's Dodger of the Day is left fielder Al Scheer.

For the record, I'm using Baseball Reference's list of Dodgers who have batted for the team and a random number generator. I'll also largely skip active players.

Today's post will be rather short because I could find very little biographical data on Al Scheer outside of his stats. He was born October 27, 1888 in Groveport, Ohio.

He doesn't have a lot of stats, to begin with, either; he debuted for the Brooklyn Superbas on August 2, 1913, the 3,950th debut in MLB history. Scheer slashed .227/.292/.227 over 26 plate appearances for the Superbas. He is also the second Dodger of the Day (DotD?) to have a direct connection to Casey Stengel: Stengel was the starting center fielder for the 1913 Superbas. The Superbas finished 6th in the National League with a 65-84 record, well behind the pennant-winning New York Giants at 101-51. The Giants would lose the World Series to the Philadelphia Athletics in five games.

Scheer went to the brand-new Federal League the next year. He started 120 games for the Indianapolis Hoosiers, who clinched the championship with an 88-65 record. Scheer had the best batting average of his career with the Hoosiers, hitting .306 and notching a career-high 123 OPS . He was also in the top 10 on the team in WAR, contributing 1.6 WAR to the team.

The 1915 season saw Scheer start for Newark Pepper, who finished 5th with an 80-72. He started 155 games for Pepper, seeing 634 plate appearances. .267/.353/.375. He only hit two homers, but hit 25 doubles and 14 triples. The latter stat doubled from his 1914 season. He also had 31 stolen bases, more than tripling his previous two seasons combined and good enough for 9th in the league.

With the end of the Federal League came the end of Scheer's career as a ballplayer. He died May 6, 1959, on Logansport, Indiana at the age of 70. He lived to see the Dodgers win a World Series in 1955 and died shortly before their 1959 World Series win.
