How to get my dog from running out the door?

Post Body

I am making myself sick with how upset I am over this being the second time she’s done this. I adopted my 3 y/o doberman from the shelter a few months ago. She has good recall INDOORS and on a leash. Otherwise, when she’s loose it’s like I’ve never done any training with her a day in her life. I continuously reinforce recall at random intervals. I’ve trained her to recognize and sit at entryways and she waits for permission to enter when I’m there(I only let her through a door when I’ve given the command every time). The first time she did it was early days when I had just barely adopted her but since then I thought I had it under control.

I was upstairs when my aunt opened the front door from the inside and started chatting with someone with the door partially open. My dobie has free rein over the living room/first floor. All I hear is my aunt calling her name and I know she’s ran out. Once I’m outside, I try recall and she looks back at me but nothing. She starts running. Miraculously, she ends up stopping long enough for me to get her, lug her over my shoulder, and carry her inside.

I am buying a 100ft leash to teach better recall outdoors but how else can I stop this from happening again? I need help y’all. I feel terrible that I didn’t train her better and that she could’ve gotten seriously hurt.
