I'm trying to get an idea what age and timeframe others have successfully let their dogs have a bit more free roam. Suki is 20 weeks and has done so well with crate training, but if she gets out of sight her main goal in life is to shove things down her gullet so I have to watch her like a hawk. I have my living room barricaded and puppy proofed but she seems to get bored if I'm not there and she doesn't have a bully stick, chew toys don't do a whole lot unless its fetch. She has a lot of prey drive and we exercise for the first 30-45 minutes after shes wakes up.

At almost 5 months I know she'll eventually need to sleep less and less so I'd love to let her hangout a bit more instead of being crated but don't know what pace to expect.

I know it may still be a ways away but what age have you all had experience letting your Dobes roam a little more?

Do you still crate them even as more mature dogs when you can't keep an eye on them?

At 20 weeks am I still doing the right thing by enforcing a nap after 1h30 mins or so of being awake? When would this likely not be the case?

Our dobie has been free roaming since he was 4 months old (trained with baby gates).
