Relatively new DM struggling to create a overarching story for a campaign.

I started a dnd campaign with my friends. We started as a pirate themed but honestly it's just a way to have the party be formed without the normal start. I'm trying to think of the end goal for the entire thing. We obviously want this to last a while so I have that set before hand that would help with my session writing. I appreciate any feedback you share. Thanks.
