I was playing my Mystic V3 complete with my subclass, The Order of The Pocket, which allows my Mystic to hide inside his ally's pockets and use Psionic abilities that would normally only apply to him to his Pocketed ally. I'm not saying that it's balanced, but rather that I would like the opportunity to refine it along with an official WoTC refinement of Mystic/Psion.
But no, we don't get that opportunity. "If you want to have a Psionic character, they also have to be another class!" -WOTC
Bullshit. Purely Psionic options have been a thing since 1st edition, and it allowed us to create characters outside of the Tolkein, Vancian magic mold.
I mean just look at the Psionic Soul Sorcerer. Your spells have a *chance* to be Psionic. A *chance*. WHAT KIND OF HORSESHIT IS THAT?!?!
Partially I blame the dumbass meme Youtubers who wouldn't treat Mystic in a fair fashion, sometimes resorting to just putting on a video of pink ping pong balls or something. XP to Level 3 was way too hyped about the potential of Mystic without considering the downsides. Of course if you yell loudly into the video about the strengths of the class without considering its drawbacks its going to seem overpowered, and the newbies who flooded Dnd 5E (not a bad thing in and of itself) paid attention to those videos and largely didn't look into it any further.
Of course WoTC is not blameless here. Instead of respecting what Psionics are meant to be, an entire power source in and of itself that is separate from spellcasting or arcane magic, WoTC put on their kid gloves and said, "Awww, we're sowwy. Is it too compwex for the newbie-woobies who pay mowe attention to memes than gameplay nuance? Well here's some dumbed-down Psionic subclasses that can never attain purely Psionic power! Oh yes here it is! Woobie woobie wooboo!"
Edit: 4th edition did Psionics better than 5th edition. Just think about that for a minute. Let it sink in.
And now we can't even have Psion subclasses, and by that I mean subclasses for an actual Psion. Granted Order of The Immortal was *bad*, but that certainly doesn't invalidate the concept of having unique Psions. Hell I think my concept is pretty unique and really only works with Psionics due to it not having any VSM components which allow you to manifest from stealth.
Anyone have any suggestions for a well refined homebrew version of Mystic/Psion?
