So this just happened yesterday and might be the greatest moment of D&D in my life. - be me Tortel Cleric of Trickery who is about 300 years old
be not me DM who is an economics major
backstory explains that i used to be the mayor of a small town of tortles
my wife and kids used to live there too
local government tested weapons on our area and completely demolished my town
only managed to survive with my kids by jumping into the sea
watch wife die
lose children in the rapids of the sea
get lost alone on a tribal island for 100 years
met and studied under my God of trickery there
finally get back on mainland, now cleric of the trickery
get job at global adventuring guild
work there for 3 months meet party and slay a couple of monster etc. etc.
get job to go to Capital of the Government that destroyed my town
still angry at said government for taking my children away from me and killing my wife
hatch scheme
DM has no idea whats going on
initiate phase 1
tell DM „I would like to get a passport again.“
DM confused but plays along, have to pay taxes I missed and pay a fee for getting my passport back.
“sure“
get passport, initiate phase 2
“I would like to go to my old insurance company please.“
DM is confused „what do you mean old insurance company?“
“The insurance company that insured my house, and entire town“
DM stunned and tells me i would need to roll persuasion against the owner of the insurance company
roll
19 6 = 25
table goes insane
DM starts calculating
“adjusted for inflation and interest the total would be 230‘863 GP“
most money we ever got was 500 gp
I am now about as rich as Kings
trickery god very happy
Tbh im not gonna use the money since I would almost certainly break the campaign with it and it wouldn’t be fun for the everyone else at the table, but hot Damn that is a lot of cash and i certainly have my retirement planned now.
TLDR: I was a mayor of a town that was destroyed 100 years ago, and thanks to a 25 I convinced the insurance company to finally pay out. Adjusted for inflation and interest I got 230‘863 gp. I am a happy tortel man.

And then the return trip can show the effects of destabilised economies, a la Mansa Musa’s return from his hajj to Mecca.
