Be me
Decide to run a 5e campaign with around 5 friends of mine
It was my first time DMing and I wanted to really test myself
Entirely home-brewed world
Went the full nine yards with the story, faction conflicts, stories for each factions, etc.
The main goal of the party starting out is that they are heading to this massive super continent named Latria because for the last 35 years, a massive miasma is surrounding the entire continent, no ships dared god sail near.
This was the trade capital of the world so it obviously had very negative effects on the surrounding continents
Legends between pirates and rouge traders began to spout up of what happened to Latria, the most popular that some dark god touched down and began to infect the land.
If you are able to go to the center of the continent where a lavish astrological college is located, and meet this dark god, you will be granted any wish you could possibly desire
So we have the party, which consisted of two warlocks, a necromancer, a fighter and a cleric embarked on the journey into this miasma
The Necromancer is played by my friend who has been playing dnd for quite some time and is a dm for a game I am playing
Fast forward a bit, the party helps route a cult from the underground sewers at a port town and rescues a splinter faction of the Latrian military. This splinter faction resquests help finding scouts in the nearby villages.
After searching a mansion for a magic artifact, they end up striking a deal to help a Nothic arcanist find a person of interest.
Standing outside of this mansion is a mysterious tall robed man
All but his intense yellow eyes covered by ornate robes and garments
âCustomers, just what I was looking for. Whatâre ya buyinâ?â
Yes I know itâs the Resident Evil 4 merchant
Confused, the party shops with him, surprised that anything they ask for, he pulls out from his coat and names a price.
âHey, do you have a Deck of Many Things?â
A small chuckle comes from the merchant as a deck of cards slides from his sleeve and into his hand, humming with intense magical energy
The party then begins to play with the deck, the Dragonborn Fighter ends up drawing the Donjon card, trapping him in a dungeon somewhere in the world. The cleric draws Gem, becoming instantly wealthy, the necromancer refuses to draw, and the Warforged Warlock draws The Fates card.
For those who donât know, The Fates allows you to have the power to ânopeâ an event in history, making it so that it never happened. Intensely powerful.
My friend who is playing the Necromancerâs eyes light up.
A little background on his character; he is an Elf named Elton who had a husband who was intensely interested in the research of demons, controlling them, harnessing their power.
A ritual went wrong and caused his husband to be murdered by an extremely powerful demon, thus setting him on this wild goose chase to get his husband back with this wish
Elton and this Warforged named Kamal weâre close friends at this point and it didnât take much convincing to get Kamal to use The Fates to bring back Eltonâs husband.
âI will use The Fates to make it so that Eltonâs husband had never dabbled in the dark arts, preventing his deathâ
With that, Elton began to vanish, as without his husband dying, he would have never been here in Latria
Cue Tifaâs Theme from Final Fantasy 7
Eltonâs player, starts to openly weep, hugging Kamalâs character in this very sweet moment
âYouâre crying over a board gameâ says the person playing the cleric
We all burst out in to laughter and prepare new characters for the players who lost one
Later on in this campaign, another player cried from a not so happy event happening. Let me know if youâd want to hear the story.
