Hi /r/DnD! I'm going to DM a 3.5 campaign and I don't know how.
Post Body

I've played 3.5 before, but it was a long time ago and I was only playing, not DMing. I have a bit of experience running 4e, both as a player and a DM, but I'm used to a very small party size (2 people besides myself) and this upcoming 3.5 campaign looks like it'll be bigger than that by at least one person.

Some stuff I'm wondering about:

do I need any books other than the PHB, DMG, and MM? I've heard tales of amazement but also of woe about splatbooks.

how do I decide how many monsters to put in an encounter?

how much experience should I give out?

Also, any miscellaneous tips would be appreciated.
