We have a public dnd group that swaps DMs every now and then. Current DM has a style of trying to unravel a mystery with very few real rolls. We spent 2 weeks trying to find material to decipher an unknown language. When there is a roll he ask did you beat it...beat what? You didn't give a DC to beat or a certain type of ability to roll. Last 6 weeks there's not been a single battle. 5 of the 6 weeks there were no npcs to communicate with. One night we had a teenager come play with us. They were so excited to play. Mid way through the night he called his dad to come pick him up he was bored to tears. Everyone seems so bored they are playing on their computers or phone making dice towers. One guy built a lego car one night. The DM will let conversation go way off topic for like an hour at a time making it only a couple of hours of play time per session.
