PC to BBEG CR conversion?

So a campaign I was playing in has just wrapped up, I'm next in the rotation to run a campaign. I want to take my PC from the end of that campaign give him a couple levels, give him a companion (npc from last campaign) and make him my big bad. How do I go about calculating a CR for those two so I know what level my group should be to fight them.
