unsure of condition situations need help as a new DM

so i want to run a campaign and i want to run a game with a friend who also is new to the game but i want to be as preparred as possible for things. something i thought about is if i have him engage in combat how would i have my friend survive a combat encounter if he becomes unconscious as per death save?
