I need some advice for how to use my monk

So I have a level 5-9 (level varies due to non-canon matches we do) way of the astral self monk with a symboite. I fight more like a fighter and barbarian rather than a monk, and I always find myself dying to either fire damage or just not having enough hp. I’ve lost over three non canon battles due to fire damage and am constantly knocked out in the sessions. Should I try to go for a different approach?
