Adding a new party member - best class
Post Body

My party is about to possibly get a new addition and the player is probably going to ask me for advice about the most helpful additions. I'd like to give him a few options, and I'm hoping you all will have some interesting suggestions. The DM's setting is a little race-conservative, so probably he will have to roll up Elf, Half-Elf, Human

Currently the party is:

  • Half-Elf Lore Bard, optimized for Enchantment and social stuff
  • Gnomish Druid (not sure what Circle), optimized for utility (very squishy and a pacifist)
  • Minotaur Fighter, Great Weapon Fighting
  • Half-Elf Assassin Rogue, mostly fights from ranged
  • Elf Wizard, Evoker
  • Elf Ranger, Archer (this character is an NPC)

I feel like the obvious/uncreative answer is a War or Life Cleric since the party only has healing through the Druid and the Bard and could use another solid melee fighter. I also feel like the larger the party gets, the more ill-equipped for healing they become with only secondary healers. Still, if doesn't want to play a medic this could be really boring.

My 5e experience is not very right, so I don't know much about in-practice party synergy. Maybe I'm missing something that would be a great addition.

ETA - Thanks for the advice so far. As a note, I have every intention of 'letting him play whatever he wants' (how I would do otherwise I cannot even say, as I am not the DM). Yet, for a person who has never played most of the classes in 5e, the embarrassment of options can be kind of paralyzing. I just want to give my friend a place to start.
