How do I explain DnD 5e to players who are new to all of DnD?

I've done it before but I never did it very well, and since a completely new player will be joining my group's party soon, I'd like some tips. Any help is appreciated! I'm not necessarily looking for a step by step guide (although something like that would be very much appreciated anyway!), but moreso looking for guidelines about how to approach this. Thank you!
