Tonight was our group's last in person session before we all go off to college so I was hoping that we would get some moments to remember, and boy we did.
(We are playing the Princes of the Apocalypse on 5e)
We start out in the town of Red Larch. My three friends (a wood elf fighter, a human paladin, and a war forged monk[played by the DM]) and, myself (a half orc fighter) after a first session which brought us to Red Larch after starting in Neverwinter. After taking a quest to go and investigate some graves in a nearby field we see a spire in the distance there we were attacked by some people riding upon giant vultures. We defeat the these people and after discussing it we decide to go to a place called Lance Rock first to deal with a necromancer who has been causing trouble for the town. After disposing of the necromancer we move to the Spire where we meet the Feathergale Knights (who look similar to the people we killed in the field the day prior). After clearing up what happened between the nights and our party (they mistook us for earth cultists). We feasted during the night and killed a manticore which had been spotted during the hunt for this manticore, we take its head and bring it back to the leader of the Knights. Their leader (Thurl Merosska) gives us his valuable gold ring for our help during the hunt. After the hunt we go to sleep and wake up in the morning. As we prepare to go to an area which has been reported to have the aforementioned earth cultists residing in it, I get pulled aside by the Thurl so he can try to attempt to recruit me to the Feathergale Knights. After rolling a perception check, I see that he is under the influence of the god his Knights worship and to join I would have to sacrifice one of my party members. I promptly said no. My character, who is an outlander that doesn't understand how society works because he was raised by wolves, says an offhanded comment about their god, and spits at their feet. They quickly pull their swords and become hostile to the party and me, while I try to pretend to faint to convince them I was under the influence some other god. After the fainting attempt does not work, my party and I get the hell out of dodge and steal four hippogriffs. We fly off the top of the spire and five knights, including the Thurl start flying in hot pursuit.
Now this is where things got interesting. We roll initiative and I am first after rolling a natural 20. For my moment of the night/ encounter I start out by rolling a natural 20 on Thurl with a long sword. After getting an advantage and using the fighter ability, Action Surge, I roll ANOTHER natural twenty and reduce him to 9 health in a single turn. Afterwards the war forged monk (played by our DM) finishes him off with a spear and his fists of monk justice and sends him flying off his hippogriff towards the base of the spire. That wasn't all though. In that same turn, the party notices that the spire is structurally unsound at its base. After discussing it our paladin decides to use Thunderous Smite to bring the tower down. Within one turn, we had rolled three natural 20's destroyed a spire filled with 50 Knights in it and absolutely destroyed the Knight's leader. The tower also took out one of the knights on the hippogriffs as well. After that we are all jaws dropped stunned and excited for the rest of the encounter. We spend it cleaning up the knights and saving the war forged monk of our DM which almost died from two critical hits. After a bit we were down to just one last Knight and for his death description I chopped off the head of his hippogriff and send him flying to the ground (our DM played a wilhelm scream with that death). After corralling one hippogriff with rope, we land and search the rubble, where I find a trident that dealt thunder damage. After a crazy, and insane battle we head back to Red Larch and put our hippogriffs in a stable, leveled up, and then ended our session there. Now out of session we are planning on buying land and making a hippogriff husbandry company, we are planning on using next session this weekend to get it off the ground (ba dum tssss). We later learn that the Feathergale Knights are part of a large cult as well and they are now pissed at us (for good reason).
Overall this has been my favorite session to date. It was full of action, fun times, and non stop twists and turns. I am glad I got to share it with you all!
