How do I get a party to band together?

So I'm starting a new D&D 5e campaign tonight with some friends, and I'm not too sure how to get them all into a party together. They're all going to start off in the same town, but how do I lead them into forming a party instead of forcing them to?
I want them to feel like they have control of their characters, so I don't just want to tell them outright to form a party for no reason whatsoever. What would be some sample events that would make them into an adventuring party?
