So, I am a long time DM for my group and we are running a new campaign. The first little mission they are going on is to retrieve some food for the village from a local farm. On there walk there, it had become night and they set up a camp. That night a blood curdling scream of something that was beyond human range out and kept going every few minutes. Over an hour went by and the sound was roughly 100 ft away and just stopped. None of them got any sleep. The next morning as they continued there hike to the farm, they found five people crucified on trees. They eventually made it to the farm and learned that the farmer has been getting attacked by a creature with a loud scream. He has lost all his farm hands to this creature and something of not that he mentioned is that none of them where killed in the open. The party prepared during that day, and even found more clues hinting towards a taunting nature of the creature. The night comes around and the creature reveals its self. 100ft away it appeared out of thin air (dropped invisibility) and screamed at the party. They just watched it, casted guidance bolt. Then proceeded to just stay right there where they were and not do a thing. At this point I felt terrible because I had no idea how to get them to chase the creature so I kept taunting them, and instead they just kept staying in the same spot, and doing nothing until I suggested it, but they still wouldn’t try to encounter it, there exact words where “Why should we follow it, we have the home field advantage on the farm” at this point I had killed a pack animal, done damage to the players, and set part of the field on fire. One of my players even exclaimed “what are we ment to do, it’s to far from us and keeps ruining back into the forest.” I’m not sure if I’m describing everything in this properly, but is there any suggestions on how I could have fixed this encounter?
