Alright so I'm having a bit of a problem at the table and am seeking some ways around this or ways to work through this. My DM is against against light abilities and light, plain in simple.
We just had our first session which was half session 0 and half session 1. We had a session 0 when I DMed (TPk'd, you can read my previous post if interested) so he figured we can just do a half session 0 with the same general rules.
During the half session 0 he asked if anyone has dark vision, my character is a half drow, another character is an elf so we said yes. He said "dark vision doesn't work". Okay, that's fine. I had planned to not rely on it and had dancing lights cantrip anyways.
During the game before we enter a dungeon (homebrew campaign and it seems to pretty much be a big dungeon) he says we can take as many NPCs as possible but they die in a single hit. You should use them as torch bearers since it'll probably be dark. Yeah, okay, I bring one because "why not", it's a free meat shield.
We enter the dungeon so I cast dancing lights and he starts fighting me on the cantrip, saying I can't cast spells while concentrating. I tell him no and show him the rules -it still really hurts my build if I have to keep concentrating on lights the whole time since I can't use hex but at least I can see.
Now as far as I know, I'm the only one with a spell like this, everyone else has to hold a torch in their offhand. We have a monk, sorcerer (no lights?), and a fighter. These are pretty new players but now they won't be able to use offhand abilities or sacrifice being blinded.
I guess that last point is the most important. The monk won't be able to use some of his ki spells if he's holding a torch im assuming? (I don't play monk so don't know), the fighter throws spears, won't be able to hit a thing, and same with the sorc unless they just blindly throw spells.
Now I'm a bit of a stickler for rules, should I follow through with his rules and make sure my team gets beaten bloody by following his rules ?
I don't know why he just doesn't use "magical darkness" whenever he wants us blind, like traps and such. Anywho what do you experienced folks think about this?
