So I ran a oneshot for my group a few weeks ago. I'm normally a player in this group, but wanted to stretch my dm muscles a bit. Helped everyone build characters and off we went.
The session started off great, bunch of role-playing, laughs, and fun for everyone. After a while we hit our first encounter, and that's where things got a bit less fun. A small argument broke out almost immediately as one of the players (who's a fellow DM) started telling another player what they should do. I jumped in and said "let them take their turn how they want." This went back and forth for a bit, with the former DM trying to justify it as the move being the best way for the party to move forward, and that it was just advice, but they were overruled by me and a couple other players.
What followed was a gradual decline in the former DM's involvement in the game. We had about 3 different encounters total, and by the last one I had to call his name a half dozen times just to get him to take his turn. During the game I chalked it up to it being late (or boredom) but could tell something was up.
Today I got a message from them, explaining that they felt put-out that I shut them down, when that was the whole basis of their character, and that they didn't have a whole lot of fun after that.
I haven't responded yet, as I'm trying to decide how to, but I wanted to poll the sub, and see what everyone else's thoughts are.
