Faerie fire lights up what objects specifically, and how?

The text for the spell reads: "Each object in a 20-foot cube within range is outlined in blue, green, or violet light (your choice)"

In my mind, object isn't very clear. I imagine every surface glowing the same color so everything kinda blends together.

If Each object Is instead distinguishable from the rest, would it be each surface of those objects? (For example, half a barrel is in the spell. Only the half inside is lit up?)

Would it just be the ones immediately visible upon cast? (You light up a rock, but only the top is lit. The underside isnt)

How would this go?
