I figured I may as well share the story just to make new players and especially new DMs not be too hard on themselves.
Me and my friends. First dnd day ever for each and every one of us, DM included. We bought the introductory set or whatever it’s called and started rolling some dice.
I was a very happy lvl 1 halfling rogue, having the time of my life dealing what seemed absurd amount of sneak attack damage, when we entered a cave and saw a wolf tied up in the end of a tunnel. We decided to lure him and whatever else was in there out and ambush them.
Apparently my dm either didn’t understand or wasn’t explained how damage and combat was written in the manual. The wolf did a strength check, broke the chains, got close to me, attacked me and dealt 1d6 whatever. Then it also dealt 7 damage. And I was doooown!!! Dm didn’t know the number between parenthesis was the average and just there to make things quick so…yeahThe wolf took two actions and pretty much crit me haha I was freaking out thinking they’d play the rest of the campaign without me and so on haha
To this day whenever I make a character and he’s the dm i make sure to include that he’s scared of wolves haha
