Oh boy.
Three friends of mine asked to play D&D. Two out of the three have played BG3. The third has not. I've only played one campaign myself but promised I'd DM for them since they're all very enthusiastic about starting to play.
We're currently scheduling our session zero. Some issues I'm already having: - One of them thinks they should all multiclass and is already trying to determine everyone else's classes and subclasses for them. - Another asked how many level-ups I was planning on giving them on the first session. - The third one expects me and the other players to teach them everything. - They've collectively watched one video on youtube and feel like they're now ready to play. The video was six minutes and about Baldur's Gate 3.
The game was great, I get it. But how do I nip this in the bud? I feel like their expectations and views of how things work when it comes to D&D are unrealistic and warped. I don't want to be an overly strict DM, but I do feel like these things, among others like metagaming, need to be addressed.
I provided them with some reading material and mentioned some of my expectations regarding session zero and the start of the campaign. I also asked them to trust my abilities in creating an enjoyable experience for all of them.
Any advice or tips on how to advance and navigate this mess are welcome.
