Let’s say you have the rogue in the party checking the chest for traps (after shooting it with his crossbow to make sure it isn’t a mimic). He doesn’t find anything. Now the rest of the party wants to jump on the band wagon and search.
I can get the whole group fanning out and looking for secret doors or footprints. But when searching a body for loot or a chest or door for traps, I think it becomes cumbersome.
I’ve actually added a tweak to the help action. If the player helping is proficient in the skill, the one performing the skill has advantage. If the helper is not proficient, I have them roll a d20. 10 or higher, advantage. Below 10, they cause disadvantage for getting in the way.
