What would the medieval equivalent of a Mayor be for a relatively small town?
Post Body

Literally just the title.

I've made a small town for the party to start in, and am planning to introduce a 'main villain' (maybe not the Big Bad, but some kind of malevolent organization, maybe one that the BBEG is a part of? Still figuring it out) and need them to do something 'evil' like assassinate the recently appointed Mayor of the town (to send a message to the people higher up the chain of command? Dunno yet, still figuring it out)

Just wanna know what the 'correct term' for a town's political leader would be, because 'Mayor' doesn't feel right, even though that's basically what it is.
